Federated Hermes: Weekly Markets Wrap-Up 5 November 2026

Outlook France

In this week’s markets wrap-up, we examine the recent sell-off in French government bonds, the drivers behind the market volatility and whether current valuations present selective opportunities for fixed income investors.

French turmoil a buying opportunity?

French government bond yields spiked in early October, with the spread on five-year debt over German bunds widening to around 142 basis points. By 26 October, the spread had eased to about 156 basis points.

The scale of the move appears disproportionate to any trigger event. It looks to reflect a further erosion of already-weak sentiment towards France, driven by months of fiscal and political uncertainty. The recent protests, accompanied by widespread looting, likely added to these concerns.

With many investors positioned the same way, repeated bouts of heavy selling in short-dated French bonds, and too few active buyers and sellers in the market, the gap between French and German borrowing costs widened far more sharply than it otherwise would have. The unwinding of crowded leveraged positions has turned a gradual repricing into a sharper and more disorderly sell-off.

The sell off has made French government bonds materially cheaper and cleared out crowded positioning. That may create selective tactical opportunities but cheaper does not necessarily mean attractive value.

France's underlying challenges remain unresolved, but Europe is better protected. We remain structurally cautious on the former. The recent repricing may create selective trading opportunities, but wider spreads alone do not justify broad exposure. While valuations have improved, France's core challenges remain unchanged: a sizeable fiscal deficit, a rising debt burden, persistent political obstacles to reform, and the risk that higher borrowing costs further weaken public finances.
